Patiala, March 17
In the wake of the outbreak of Covid-19, the district Health Department today raided chemist shops to keep a check on hoarding of masks and sanitisers.
During the raid, the department warned the chemists of strict action if they were found hoarding masks and sanitisers. The department said owners of chemist shops would be booked if they were found involved in surge pricing.
The raid was conducted after the Deputy Commissioner issued directions to SDMs to keep a check on hoarding of masks and sanitisers.
Dr Satinder Singh, Senior Medical Officer, Samana, said the Health Department, along with the Tehsildar and police officials, checked chemist shops.
He said masks were not available at the shops that were checked. However, hand sanitisers were available in sufficient quantity. He said, “Masks are only required when there is an infected patient in the surroundings. If we cover our mouth while coughing and sneezing with an elbow, it is sufficient.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit ordered the shutdown of coaching institutes and IELTS centres in the district until further orders. The district is a hub of coaching centres. Students from across the state come here to prepare for competitive exams.
