The Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Sheel Nagu, distributed enrolment certificates among advocates during a convocation ceremony organised by the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana at Law Bhawan here yesterday. He exhorted newly enrolled advocates to be sincere and dedicated towards the legal profession.
In all, 292 advocates were enrolled today. The Chief Justice distributed 264 licences among advocates. While addressing newly enrolled advocates, the Chief Justice motivated them to believe that sky’s the limit. He encouraged advocates not shun hard work.
Dr Vijender Singh Ahlawat, Chairman, Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, said out 292 advocates 264 were from different parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh who got their licences during the ceremony.
The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana was established under the Advocates Act 1961. Since its inception, the council had on its roll over one lakh advocates.
86-year-old Hisar resident gets licence
In an exemplary show of grit and determination, an 86-year-old Umed Singh, a resident of Hisar, has set an example for many. At this age, when most persons lived a retired and mundane life while doing nothing Umed Singh became an advocate. The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana gave him licence to practice as an advocate. He was among 264 newly enrolled advocates who were given licence by Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
When his name was announced as the oldest person to receive an enrolment certificate, the Chief Justice was also surprised and expressed his desire to meet him personally. As per the record available with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, Umed Singh was born on December 12, 1938.
He completed his Matric in 1960. After a gap of over 56 years he cleared plus two exams in 2016. He graduated in arts from Kurukshetra University in 2019. After that he decided to become a lawyer and got admission in Chhaju Ram Law College, Hisar. He received the LLB degree from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, in 2023.
He applied for a licence to practise as an advocate to the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana in August 2024. After completing all the formalities, he was given licence by the Bar Council.
Lekhraj Sharma, chairman, privilege committee, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, said, “Umed Singh has proved that if one decides to do something he can do it despite all odds. His achievement is an example for new generation. We are happy to enrol him as an advocate.”
