Chandigarh, July 1

City girl Kashvi Garg has won bronze in the 30th Junior (U-20) National Fencing Championship 2022-23 held at Cuttack, Odisha.

Kashvi, a player of the Epee event, defeated Anjali Bhatre of Madhya Pradesh (15-6), SK Naziya of Telangana (12-9) and Pooja Dhangi of Madhya Pradesh (15-12) in the knockout matches, before losing to the reigning national champion Taniksha Khatri of Haryana (15-13) in a nail-biting match. Taniksha went on to win gold while Dnyaneshwari Shinde of Maharashtra settled with silver. There were a total of 95 fencers from all over the country who competed in this event.

The medal in this tournament will earn Kashvi a place in the Indian fencing team which will be competing in the Commonwealth Junior Fencing Championship to be held in London next month. Kashvi had recently participated in FIE Grand Prix 2022 (Women, Senior, Epee) held in Doha where she was the youngest fencer of the tournament.

Kashvi is a medical stream student of Class XII at Carmel Convent School.
