“Getting enough quality sleep at the right time can help protect your mental and physical health and improve quality of life,” Dr Bhaskar said. He said infants and children needed 10-16 hours, teenagers needed 9-10 hours and adults needed 7-9 hours of sleep.

Sleep deficiency had also been linked to depression, suicide and risk-taking behaviour, he said and added that one of the most common disorders was obstructive sleep apnea. As per the latest estimate, nearly a billion people globally suffer from this problem, and India has the fourth highest prevalence of this disorder in the world, he added.
