Commuters decry civic apathy over pending road repairs in Fatehgarh Sahib
The residents have called for immediate repair roads in the urban as well as the rural areas of the district. Highlighting the deplorable condition of the pothole-ridden roads, they said the inaction from civic authorities could result in major accidents.
Notably, a 26-year-old social media influencer, Yogesh Kumar, who was a resident of Sirhind, died after his bike fell into a pothole on the road opposite Mahesh Hospital.
Following the news item in The Tribune, PWD department swung into action and filled the potholes at several places with the sand and gravel as a temporarily fix. However, subsequent rain soon washed away the patch work and further aggravated the problem.
Similarly, the patch work initiated by the department a month ago was also washed off at several places making movement of vehicles on the city roads a nightmare.
The representatives of NGOs and senior citizens led by RN Sharma have alleged that most of the roads in the city are riddled with potholes leading to occasional accidents.
“The roads from old bus stand on GT Road, Kumar Sweet to Bhatti Chowk, Lincoln College Road, the one connecting Sirhind town to Sirhind City, Main Bassi Pathana road, among others need urgent repair,” they said, adding that the internal roads of the town have also developed pothole, making daily commute a nightmare.
Besides, they said, the residents have been suffering due to the lack of basic civic amenities like cleanliness, street lights, proper drinking water and sewerage system, urging the administration and local MLA to take action.
