Complainant identifies three accused in Burail murder case

A complainant in the five-year old murder of property dealer Sonu Shah in Burail, Parveen Shah, has identified three accused in the court.

The other accused, including Lawrance Bishnoi, were also produced through video conferencing in the court.

Terminder Singh, the attorney for the accused, said that since Bishnoi was on “maun vrat (vow of silence)” but he denied any involvement in the case through gestures. Amit Kumar, counsel of the accused Manjit, also cross-examined the complainant.

The court had framed the charges against seven accused Abhishek, Raju Basodi, Lawrance Bishnoi, Rajan, Dharminder Singh, Manjit and Shubham Prajaptai in the case in 2022 under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of the Arms Act to which they pleaded not guilty.

As per the chargesheet, Sonu Shah, a property dealer, was allegedly gunned down by the four assailants inside his office at Burail village Sector 45, on September 28, 2019.

Two of his colleagues, Joginder Phelwan and Rommy, were also injured in the firing. According to the police, Sonu Shah was murdered on the behest of Lawrence Bishnoi.

Sonu Shah was running a cable business and was a Sector 45 resident. The incident took place when three persons walked into Sonu’s office claiming that they were in the search of rented accommodation before opening fire.

Four bullets hit Sonu, who died on the spot. Joginder sustained a bullet injury on his back while another hit Ronny on his right leg. Around 14 bullets were fired and the police had recovered 12 empty shells. The assailants were also caught on the CCTV cameras installed at Sonu’s office and in the surrounding areas.

Around half-an-hour after the incident, a Facebook post had surfaced from a profile purportedly of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, taking responsibility of the murder. The post said that Bishnoi’s two associates — Kala Rana and Raju Basodi — had murdered Sonu

The Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police filed the chargesheet against the accused in November 2021. The police had initially arrested Dharminder in for allegedly providing shelter to at least four assailants in a hotel in Sector 80, Mohali.
