The Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee today took out a candlelight march at Sector 42, as part of the party’s nationwide agitation programme against alleged electoral malpractices.

The march was led by MP Manish Tewari and HS Lucky, president of the Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee. It was organised by Jasbir Singh Bunty, District Congress Committee president, Urban 2, and Senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh.

Manish Tewari said, “The revelations made by Rahul Gandhi have shaken public faith in the Election Commission. When the body tasked with conducting fair elections and safeguarding democracy is seen sitting in the lap of the BJP, it becomes the duty of every citizen to stand up for protecting our democracy.”

He declared that the Congress will not rest until transparency and professional integrity is ensured in the working of Election Commission, and the truth about “vote manipulation” in the elections held in 2024 is laid bare.

HS Lucky said, “The Election Commission is the guardian of our democratic process. If it fails in its role, democracy itself will be finished.” He added that the Chandigarh Congress demands transparency, honesty and accountability from the Election Commission.

The Congress emphasised that the march is only the beginning of a larger struggle to safeguard democracy in the country.

Meanwhile, the city Congress has welcomed the directions issued to the Election Commission by the Supreme Court today during hearing of multiple petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision of the Bihar electoral rolls.

The march saw many Congress activists marching on the city roads carrying the Tricolours, candles and placards. They were raising slogans “Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod” as they marched.
