The Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee, led by president HS Lucky, along with Congress councillors, Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Bunty, Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta, Gurpreet Gabi, Darshna Rani, Nirmala Devi and Sachin Galav today submitted a memorandum to Special Commissioner Pardeep Kumar, drawing his attention to deterioration of road infrastructure across the city — particularly in areas under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.

Lucky said that it was conveyed to the Commissioner that this was perhaps the first time in the history of the MC that the condition of roads had deteriorated to such dismal levels.

Roads that once exemplified Chandigarh’s reputation for urban planning and high-quality infrastructure now have deep potholes, broken stretches, uneven surfaces and crumbling edges — posing serious risk to commuters and pedestrians alike.

The Commissioner was apprised of some of the worst-affected areas — almost all internal sector roads of residential areas, that are riddled with potholes, Industrial Area, Phase I and II, where broken and poorly maintained roads are hampering trade and daily movement, internal market roads, which are extremely unsafe for cyclists, two-wheelers and elderly, and main arterial roads, including those from the Sector 26 grain market to the Transport Area, which are in a serious state of disrepair.

They said that it was disappointing that despite the allocation of hundreds of crores every year for road repairs and maintenance, the execution of these works remain grossly inadequate, mismanaged and unaccountable. The leaders said that Chandigarh was once considered a model city known for its visionary planning and well-maintained infrastructure.

Sadly, the current state of its roads reflects administrative apathy and failure. It is a matter of deep concern not only for residents, but also for elected representatives committed to public welfare. Senior leaders of the Congress Yadvinder Mehta and Dilawar Singh were also present on the occasion.
