Chandigarh, February 10

The Chandigarh District Urban Congress Committee organised a protest under the leadership of Parveen Narang Bunty, president of the unit, near the Municipal Corporation office in Sector 17 here today to highlight the alleged “forgery” committed at the behest of the BJP during the January 30 mayoral elections in the city.

Bare-chested in chilly weather in the evening, the agitated Congress men raised slogans against the BJP.

Speaking on the occasion, HS Lucky, president of the city Congress, said the party was trying to shame the alleged anti-democratic and dictatorial stance of the BJP by organising different types of protest on a daily basis.

Lucky alleged that the open electoral corruption by the BJP tarnished the name of the City Beautiful and people would not forgive it for the misdemeanor.

Addressing party workers, Bunty alleged that the illegally elected mayor of the municipal corporation should resign immediately in the interest of the people of Chandigarh. He further said the continuation of such a mayor even for a single day was an insult to the city residents.

Torch rally at Dhanas

The city Youth Congress organised a ‘Mashal Nyay Rally’ against the Modi-government at Dhanas Colony here today.

National president of Youth Congress Shreenivas BV, former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, city Congress president HS Lucky, councillors Gurpreet Gabi and Sachin Galav, ex-Mayor Subhash Chawla and other leaders participated in the march.

Under the leadership of city Youth Congress vice-president Deepak Lubana and district president Dheeraj Gupta, workers carried out the rally through the colony and raised slogans against the BJP government at the Centre.

Srinivas said the aim and objective of Rahul Gandhi’s Nyaya Yatra was to bring before the people the ‘real face’ of the BJP.

“The BJP is continuously looting the country. The nation’s money is going into the pockets of a few rich, unemployment is on the rise, farmers are on the streets again and inflation is hitting people hard,” he alleged.

Bansal said, “The purpose of the rally was to demand justice against the electoral fraud committed by the BJP in the mayoral elections, as well as to demand justice for the exploitation of contract workers in various departments in the city.”
