  • Practise frequent handwashing. Wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub. Wash hands even if they are visibly clean
  • Cover your nose and mouth with handkerchief/ tissue while sneezing and coughing. Throw used tissues into closed bins immediately after use
  • Maintain a safe distance from persons during interaction, especially with those having flu-like symptoms. Sneeze in the inner side of your elbow, not to cough into the palms
  • See a doctor if you feel unwell (fever, difficulty in breathing and coughing). While visiting doctor, wear a mask/cloth to cover your mouth and nose

  • Don’t shake hands. No close contact with anyone, if you’re experiencing cough and fever. Don’t touch your eyes, nose and mouth. Don’t spit in public
  • Travel only if necessary, avoid travelling to any affected region. Avoid large gatherings, including sitting in groups at canteens
  • Don’t visit gyms, pubs and crowded places etc. Don’t spread rumours, panic

What happens to a person who develops the disease?

Majority of the people (80%) will require no treatment as such and will recover on their own. A small proportion (less than 20%) may need hospitalisation.

A very small proportion (mainly with underlying chronic illness) may need admission in intensive care unit (ICU).

How long does coronavirus survive over the surfaces or objects?

Studies suggest that the coronaviruses, including preliminary information on Covid-19, may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment).

What is the role of hand sanitisers?

These are to be used when you are caring for patients infected with coronavirus. In general, washing hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds is recommended. If hands are dirty or soiled, do not use alcohol-based sanitiser, but wash hands with soap and water.
