A 31-year-old contractor died after suffering a fatal electric shock while working near Hotel Royal Plaza in Dariya on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Shubham Sharma, a resident of Dhakoli in Zirakpur. He was installing a flex board along with two workers when the incident took place.
According to eyewitnesses, Sharma told his workers to repair a light on the board. However, they refused, citing the presence of high-voltage overhead wires of the Bhakra Beas Management Board and warning of the risks involved. Sharma then proceeded to handle the task himself using a long rope. In the process, he accidentally came into contact with one of the live high-tension wires and was electrocuted. He died on the spot.
Locals said the danger of the exposed high-voltage wires in the area is widely known. “Everyone here is aware of the BBMB wires. It’s shocking that despite the warning, he tried to fix it himself,” an eyewitness said.
A report under Section 194 of the BNSS, which deals with procedures following unnatural deaths, has been filed at the Dariya police post.
