Mohali, January 31

With no traffic cop stationed at the light point, there was chaos at the Sector 68-69 intersection during the evening rush hours on Wednesday. Hence, residents had to take over traffic management as long queues of vehicles stretched on all sides of the intersection. As the traffic kept on increasing, commuters began jumping traffic lights, which led to more chaos. The road continued to be clogged from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

Irate commuters rued the pathetic traffic management system of the Mohali traffic police. Jagtar Singh, a commuter who was waiting for the road to open up, said, “The lackadaisical attitude of the Mohali traffic police is a cause of concern for commuters. A lot of accidents occur at this particular intersection, as it is very narrow. The design of the road has serious flaws, as the tarmac is patchy on the Kumbra side, while the road towards the railway station is narrow, which causes a traffic bottleneck. Despite all this, we barely ever see a traffic cop stationed here.”

Looking at the sad state of affairs, a few youths passing by the area volunteered to streamline the traffic on the road. A senior police official said that the traffic wing is woefully understaffed.
