Country’s oldest amateur golfing event returns to city

The Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) will host the country’s oldest amateur golfing event under the aegis of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) from December 9 to 15. The All India Northern India Junior Boys Golf Championship will be played at the CGC greens, where over 100 golfers from across the country will vie for the title.

This will be the 123rd edition of the tournament and the CGC will host the event after 15 years. The tournament dates back to 1892. The culmination of the tournament will decide the No. 1 amateur of golfer of India. The event will be played under the IGU banner with 32 players making the final cut. The final will be a 36-hole affair. In case of a draw in the final tie, the winner will be decided by playoff.

Top 60 golfers on the IGU list will be playing in the event. The host club has got 15 slots and some top golfers from the city (based on their rankings) have been given a direct entry, while trials were organised to fill other slots.

Harjai Milkha Singh, son of Indian golfing icon Jeev Milkha Singh, has got a direct entry from the city. Neel Jolly, Jaiveer Kang, Ransher Randhawa and Jai Gupta are some other names who will carry the local challenge in the event.

“After a gap of 15 years, the tournament is returning to the CGC. This will be the IGU’s last event of the year and around 110 golfers will participate here. The course is in an excellent condition and the weather is quite good to play a good round of golf. We are ready to make this event a memorable one and host many such events in the near future,” said Rohit Singh Dagar, Captain, CGC.

He added, “This is a great platform for the youngsters and a stepping stone for all of them before they make it big in the world of golf.” Dagar was accompanied by Agnish Rajesh, Raman Abrol and GS Kochhar, other members of the organising committee, to issue details of the meet.
