After a gap of two years, the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has increased the fare of both AC and non-AC buses by 25 to 35 per cent. The CTU had last increased the fare in 2018.
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore approved the proposal of fare hike at a meeting with Transport Secretary AK Singla today. The decision has been taken after imposition of the GST on the bus fare. There is no increase in the first slab.
In the first slab, commuters travelling in non-AC buses pay Rs 10 for up to 5 km. The fare has been increased by Rs 5 in the other two slabs. Now, residents will have to pay Rs 20 for travel from 5 km to 10 km and Rs 25 for over 10 km.
An AC bus ticket currently costs Rs 15 for up to 5 km. There is no increase in this fare. However, commuters will have to pay Rs 25 for travel from 5 km to 10 km and Rs 30 for over 10 km now. The fare in these categories have been increased by Rs 5.
The charges for the daily and monthly pass have also been increased.
RK Garg, president of the Second Innings Association, opposed the increase while saying that the fare should not be increased if the Administration wanted to promote public transport.
