In a dramatic turn of events on Friday morning, a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) electric bus carrying nearly 20 passengers overturned while navigating a bend near Sector 17, triggering panic at one of the city’s busiest intersections. The mishap occurred around 10.15 am, close to the parade ground.

Police teams arrived within minutes, pulling passengers out of the toppled vehicle as anxious bystanders looked on. According to the SHO of Sector 17 police station, the bus suddenly lost balance and overturned. Although the sight of the overturned vehicle raised fears of a major tragedy, relief followed soon after – there were no fatalities.

Around a dozen passengers sustained minor injuries and were promptly shifted to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16 (GMSH-16), where doctors confirmed they were out of danger. The bus driver claimed that the vehicle accelerated abruptly due to a technical fault, while an eyewitness disputed this account.

“The bus was traveling at high speed while taking the turn. One of its front tires went onto the raised pavement, causing it to overturn,” the witness said, adding that the front windshield shattered on impact. The witness blamed the passenger for rash handling, while the driver maintained that he had not accelerated and that the mishap was triggered by mechanical failure.

Police officials confirmed that no FIR has been registered, as no passenger lodged a complaint. They added that CTU would conduct an internal inquiry and seek an assessment from company experts to determine whether a technical fault led to the incident. Authorities assured that safety checks across the electric fleet would be stepped up to prevent similar occurrences.

“Passenger safety remains our top priority, and no lapses will be tolerated,” a senior CTU official said.
