In my observation, cyclists barely use the tracks made for them and rather paddle on the main roads. Every day, we see the Chandigarh Traffic Police conducting “awareness drives”, asking cyclists, rickshaw-pullers and hand-cart pullers to use the tracks. Neither the Administration nor the Municipal Corporation and the traffic police are bothered about this problem on roads due to which several accidents take place daily.

Plug loopholes

Instead of increasing the water tariff, the Municipal Corporation should plug leakages to check wastage of water. In one report, the wastage of water due to leakage in broken water pipes and free flow of water through open taps is around 20 million gallons per year, causing a loss of about Rs 10 crore to the MC. Currently, there is no mechanism to plug leakages in the broken water pipes. Replacement of water pipes which were laid about 40 years ago is required immediately. It is not only water which is being wasted but roads are also being damaged.
