Efforts on to repair roads, causeways damaged by swollen Ghaggar

A day after an ambulance got stuck at the damaged Mubarikpur causeway on the Dhakoli-Dera Bassi road, officials of the administration said the cleaning of the causeway on the Ghaggar — a key link to Zirakpur — is in full swing.

Teams of the local Municipal Council are engaged in cleaning operations as well as repairs of the approach roads to the causeway to ensure connectivity.

Efforts are underway to drain water between Bhagat Majra and Palhedi. Adequate machinery and manpower have been deployed by the district administration to ensure a speedy removal of water and restoration of normalcy in the affected areas.

Repair work on a portion of Gochar–Mirzapur road, which was washed away in the heavy rain recently, is underway. The teams of the Drainage and PWD Departments are carrying out the restoration work.

Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal directed the MC officials and the Rural Development & Panchayat Department to intensify efforts for removing stagnant water from the flood-affected areas.

The assessment of damage caused to crops, livestock and houses is underway. The administration has assured the affected families that compensation will be disbursed soon.

Residents of Bishanpura near Dhakoli said a portion of the wall of the dumping ground collapsed and garbage is spilling on to the road and nearby drain.

In Dera Bassi, MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa visited the flood-affected areas to inspect the relief works. He also visited Bahadurgarh and assured the local residents that he would get the road repaired.

Randhawa inspected the work to strengthen the Ghaggar embankment in Bhankharpur and thanked the villagers for their cooperation. Later, he went to Jarot village and took stock of the situation.

In Mohali, Civil Surgeon Sangeeta Jain said anti-snake venom injections were available at various government health facilities across the district. Issuing an advisory for the residents, she said during the rainy season, especially in floodwaters, cases of snake bites are common.
