Ekam leads city fencers’ charge

City fencers led by Ekam Toor finished overall third in the recently concluded 65th National School Games U-14 Championship at Ambubhai Purani Sports Complex in Nadiad, Gujarat.

Ekam of Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, humbled Tamil Nadu’s Preethi 9-8 to win the gold medal in the girls’ foil competition.

She defeated Bihar’s Shneha (10-0), Kanan from Maharashtra (10-1), Gujarat’s Anita (10-3) and NV Tenashu of Tamil Nadu (15-5) on her way to final.

In the epee competition, Ekam settled for a silver after losing 13-15 to Nelcyrose of Manipur. Earlier, she beat Bhunashwari of Tamil Nadu (10-8), Rupali Shau of Chhattisgarh (10-3) and Haryana’s Prachi Lohan (15-7).

In the team championships, Chandigarh’s Ekam, Mahira Batheja, Himani Bhandari and Pranshi claimed a gold medal in the foil event.

In the epee competition, Chandigarh team comprising Ekam, Sanchi, Anushka and Khushboo won the bronze medal.
