Electricity dept privatisation: Cong starts chain hunger strike
The city Congress today launched a seven-day chain hunger strike in front of Nehru Park in Sector 22 to protest against privatisation of the UT Electricity Department.
Congress spokesperson Rajiv Sharma said five activists of the party would sit on hunger strike from 10 am to 6 pm for seven days to express solidarity with the city residents and the employees of the Electricity Department, who all were aghast at the ‘Tughlaqi’ decision of the UT Administration to hand over the profitable and well-managed power transmission system in the city to a private businessman.
On the first day, city Congress president HS Lucky led the group of party activists on a hunger strike.
Speaking on the occasion, Lucky asked the local BJP leaders to make their stand clear on the issue of the privatisation of the UT Electricity Department.
Councillors Gurpreet Gabi, Jasbir Bunti and Taruna Mehta and the party’s former youth wing president Manoj Lubana observed the hunger strike along with Lucky. Another team of Congress leaders would sit on a hunger strike at the same venue tomorrow.
