Engineering students visit Rupnagar plant
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University, today organised an educational visit to the Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Power Plant (GGSSTPP) in Rupnagar. The visit was aimed to provide students with practical insights into large-scale power generation and the critical role of thermal energy in meeting India’s electricity demands.
A group of 35 Mechanical Engineering students, accompanied by faculty members Prof Shankar Sehgal, Parveen Goyal, Anjali Gupta and Surjeet Singh, explored key facilities of the 840 MW capacity power plant, including the boiler region, turbine hall, power generation facility, control room and cooling systems. The visit offered a hands-on understanding of the plant’s operations, which feature four units of 210 MW each.
Engineer Suminderjit Singh from GGSSTPP guided the team through the technical intricacies of the power plant, covering coal handling, combustion, steam generation, and turbine operations.
