The convict, Devinder Singh, who was then posted at the Jakhal railway station in Haryana, had demanded a bribe of Rs30,000 from Mandeep Singh in lieu of not taking action against him and his two fellow labourers after he detained them for allegedly damaging an optical fibre cable of the railway station during their work.

The cop was held guilty under Sections 7 and 13 (1) (d) read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The quantum of sentence in the case will be pronounced tomorrow.

According to the CBI, Devinder Singh had detained the complainant and his fellow labourers Randhir Singh and Chandi Ram on the intervening night of September 13 and 14 in 2016. “The convict had demanded an illegal gratification of Rs30,000 in lieu of releasing them as well as an impounded car. The convict subsequently reduced the bribe money to Rs15,000. On September 14, 2016, the convict directed the complainant to hand over Rs10,000 as bribe money to one Sourabh Saini, a resident of New Basti near the railway station,” the CBI stated.

Following a complaint, the investigating agency laid a trap and arrested Saini while accepting the bribe money of Rs10,000 from the complainant on behalf of the accused.

“Pre-trap and post-trap proceeding revealed that an amount of Rs10,000 was paid by the complainant to Saini (approver) on the demand and direction of the accused and the said amount of Rs10,000 was allegedly recovered from his possession,” the CBI added.

The CBI had then arrested Devinder Singh.
