Experts discuss advances in cancer diagnosis

Around 1,000 participants from various parts of the country and almost 150 experts from India and abroad were part of the three-day 68th annual national conference of the India Association of Pathologist and Microbiologists (APCON-2019).
The conference, which was organised by the Department of Histopathology, PGI, concluded today.
The theme of the conference was ‘Genetics decodes morphology’ emphasising the importance of study of genes and their defects in understanding various disease process and how this information can be used to manage treatment of patients with personalised medicines. Many new techniques such as proteomics, artificial intelligence, transcriptomics and core needle biopsy interpretation were discussed.
Four eminent international speakers — Dr Dhanpat Jain (Yale University, USA), Dr Jane Dahlstorm (Canberra, Australia), Dr Nagarjun Rao (Milwakee, USA) and Dr SS Banerjee (Manchester, UK) — talked about recent advances in the diagnosis of common cancers such as liver, breast, lungs and skin.
Chief guest Prof YK Chawla, former Director, PGI, highlighted the indispensable role of pathologist in the patient management care. He highlighted the importance of autopsy pathology in understanding the spectrum of various diseases.
In all, 400 high quality research papers and posters were also presented by students and pathologists.
