Facial-recognition attendance for Chandigarh staff after March
The UT Administration is set to phase out its traditional attendance system for clerks and replace it with a geo-fenced facial-recognition technology. The new system is expected to bring significant changes to the administration’s functioning, ultimately benefitting the residents of the city.
The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is conducting department-wise training sessions to familiarise the employees with the system. The training process is expected to be completed by March, after which the new technology will be rolled out across all major departments of the administration.
The geo-fenced facial-recognition system requires employees to mark attendance through a mobile app or portal. However, attendance can only be registered when an employee is physically present at the designated location or office. This ensures eliminates the possibility of proxy attendance, a major issue in various departments.
There are more than 23,000 employees, including contractual and outsourced staff, in various departments. Each department has its own attendance mechanism, with some adopting time-fenced authentication since the Covid-19 pandemic, while others continue with the old system.
The implementation of the new system will unify the attendance process across all departments, creating a standardised and efficient framework. It will also ensure that the employees adhere to their work schedules. The new system will ensure that employees of departments dealing will public matters are present during working hours.
