Chandigarh, January 20
The UT police have arrested a Jalandhar resident for allegedly impersonating as an officer of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to dupe gullible people.
According to the police, Ajay Singh, Deputy Director, ED, posted at the Sector 18 office in Chandigarh, had reported that two persons, Girish Tayagi and Jitender Kumar, were impersonating as ED officials while no such officers were posted in the directorate. Sources said ED officials came to know about the suspects and their phone numbers. The phone numbers used by the suspects to contact people were provided to the police.
Acting on the complaint, a case under Sections 419 (cheating by personation) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC was registered at the Sector 19 police station yesterday.
With the help of the mobile phone numbers, the police managed to track one of the suspects, identified as Taranjeet, a resident of Jalandhar. Acting swiftly, cops nabbed him at his house on Wednesday night.
The police said Taranjeet used to pose as ED officer Girish Tayagi to dupe people. The suspect was produced in a court today, which sent him to one-day police remand. “We have launched an investigation to identify people involved in this racket,” said a police official.
