Mohali, September 9

Hundreds of farmers today held a protest rally near the District Administrative Complex against less compensation being given to them for the land being acquired by the government for construction of roads. The protesters raised slogans against the Punjab government and demanded that they should be given compensation on the prevailing market rate.

Farmers from different parts of the state reached the rally site in tractor-trailers, thus blocking all roads leading to the complex. Due to the rally, people had to face problems in getting their works done at various government offices located in the complex. A huge traffic jam was witnessed at Sohana village and its surrounding areas. The police had to face a tough time in diverting the traffic.

Addressing the protesters, farm leaders Sonia Mann and Dr Karamjit Singh Chilla said the Central Government was acquiring fertile land for the construction of highways and other roads, but the compensation being given to farmers for these land was meagre. The farmers should be compensated as per the market rate and the Punjab government should take up the matter with the Centre.
