Fatehgarh Sahib, February 26

Farmers of the district today staged a protest by parking their tractors on GT Road at Sirhind and raised slogans against the Union Government. The district presidents of Krantikari Kisan Union, BKU (Rajewal) and BKU (Kadian), Harnek Singh Bhallamajra and Bhupinder Singh Jallahand Satbir Singh, respectively, said the Union Government has backtracked on their promises from over two years ago. They said the government was working to eliminate the farmers by implementing the policies of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The farmers said, as per the policies of the WTO, the Centre is importing pulses and other food items but is not ready to grant MSP to the farmers of India. They said if the country does leave the WTO, farmers’ debts would continue to rise.

Mohali: Members of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) organised a tractor march today in the district against the Central Government’s participation in the WTO meeting in Doha today. They parked their tractors alongside the highways without obstructing the traffic, demanding the agriculture sector be taken out of the WTO agreement as it ‘advocates the removal of subsidies on fertilisers and pesticides’. — TNS
