Mohali: Farmers protest rising fuel prices

Mohali, July 8

The farmers today staged a sit-in protest against the rising fuel prices and demanded that taxes on petrol and diesel be withdrawn to curb the inflation. The protest was held on the call of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM).

A large number of farmers and their supporters gathered at the traffic light point near Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan, Sohana, and raised slogans against the Modi government.

The protesters slammed the Centre and sought a crackdown on inflation by reducing the oil and gas prices. They also demanded repeal of the three agriculture laws introduced by the Modi government.

Addressing a gathering, senior Azad group member Parvinder Singh Sohana, Azad Group councillor Harjinder Kaur Sohana, social activist Narinder Singh Kang, Nachhatar Singh Baidwan and Harvinder Singh Nambardar said the Modi government, which had come to power by promising better days, had instead made the life “miserable” for common people.

They said oil and LPG prices were rising with each passing day and the Modi government was “looting the people by imposing heavy taxes on the sale of petrol and diesel”.

A protest was also held at Phase-7, where farmers placed gas cylinders on road and raised slogans against the Centre.

Councilor Paramjit Singh Kahlon said: “Daily rising prices of oil and gas have made life miserable for the common man.”

“The Modi government is acting as an agent of the corporate houses,” he said.

In Kharar, members of the Bharti Kisan Union in association with other farmer unions held a protest rally at bus stand.

BKU leaders said the people in the country were already suffering financial crisis due to the Covid pandemic and the Centre was putting extra burden on them by increasing the prices of oil and gas.
