Fashion gets boost, NIFT in Panchkula

Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), set up at a cost of Rs 133.16 crore, on 10.45 acres at Sector 23 in Panchkula today.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, while expressing his gratitude to the Central government for giving Haryana, especially Panchkula, an institution of national importance said if the Union Minister agreed to the state’s proposal, the work of the second phase would be completed on the basis of 50:50 ratio. He said whatever works were required to be done in the second phase in the institute would be done soon. He also appealed to the Union Minister for cooperation for the completion of the second phase. He said in the second phase, there were plans to build hostels, theatres and auditoriums.

Khattar said the NIFT campus had been established in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Textiles and NIFT, Delhi. With the inauguration of this campus, another step forward had been taken for the development of Haryana. “This is the 17th campus of the country which has been inaugurated in Panchkula and will be developed as a world-class NIFT campus,” he said.

Khattar said as per the policy of NIFT, 20 per cent of the seats in the institute would be reserved for the domiciles of Haryana. The institute will offer four-year degree courses in fashion design/textile design, apparel production and two-year masters degree courses in fashion technology, design and fashion management. There will also be certificate programmes of one year and six-month duration, he added.

The CM said the newly inaugurated NIFT campus in Panchkula would certainly give a major boost to the textile, handloom and cottage industries in the state. There will certainly be no placement problem for the students who would be passing out from NIFT. There is a great demand for such professionals in national and international companies,” said the CM.

Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister, Piyush Goyal said he was confident that the campus of NIFT would emerge as a landmark institute and the professionals passing out from this prestigious place would make a remarkable contribution in the fashion world.
