Chandigarh, February 3

A local court has sentenced five persons to five years of rigorous imprisonment each for planning a dacoity.

The police registered the case against the accused, Ravi, Vikas, alias Pitta; Raj Narayan, alias Raj; Kasim, alias Machhi, and Sonu, for the offences punishable under Sections 399 and 402 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, in March 2022. The police got to know that these youths were going to commit a dacoity and would gather at the back of a tubewell in Mauli Jagran.

Consequently, SI Malkit Singh, along with his team, laid a trap near the tubewell. Around 10:10 pm, the youths gathered at the tubewell and were arrested by the police.

Finding a prima facie case, the court framed charges under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC against the accused, to which they pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.

The counsel for the accused said they were falsely implicated in the case. The Public Prosecutor argued before the court that the prosecution had proved the case beyond a shadow of doubt.

After hearing the arguments, the court convicted the accused and sentenced them to five-year rigorous imprisonment each.
