In his complaint to the police, the victim’s father, Gurmail Singh of Sakrulapur village, had stated that on July 9, 2020, his son went to play with children of his village, but did not return home. At night, his son was found lying unconscious behind a shop next to his house with froth oozing out of his mouth. He was taken to the Kharar Civil Hospital where a doctor declared him brought dead.

During investigation, Sakrulapur village sarpanch Manwinder Singh told the police that Amandeep told him that Harpreet died due to her negligence and fear. Amandeep did not tell anyone, but she did not kill him, the sarpanch said. Cops arrested Amandeep.

While acquitting the accused, the court held that the evidence on the record did not complete the chain of circumstances leading to an inference that it was only Amandeep who had killed Harpreet by drowning him in a drum.
