Four get 12-year rigorous imprisonment

Additional Session Judge Rajneesh has sentenced four persons to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting them under section 22 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The court has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on the convicts.

According to the prosecution, convict Vijay Das was arrested in February 2017 near the government school, Burail, with 20 injections of pheniramine maleate (10 ml each and buprenorphine omegsic (2 ml each). The police claimed he failed to produce any valid permit or licence for the same.

During investigation, Rinku, Ravi and Sukhjinder were also arrested allegedly with a commercial quantity of the contraband.

The counsel for the accused claimed section 50 of the Act had not been complied with when the accused were arrested. Public prosecutor JP Singh had sought an exemplary punishment for the accused in view of the seriousness of the offence.
