Sharing further details, Dera Bassi station house officer (SHO) Sumit Mor said, “The statement of the driver and students will be recorded after they are discharged from the hospital.”

“The accidental vehicle is a private van that was hired to pick up and drop children to school,” the SHO further added.

Residents, meanwhile, questioned the role of traffic police in ensuring the safety of school children and called for effective implementation of Safe Vahan police.

“How is it that old vehicles are being used to transport 20-25 school children day in and day out for years. Does the Mohali administration and traffic police not see them plying on roads daily?” the residents questioned.
