Chandigarh, February 12
While stating that the “farmers’ protest has now become a human rights issue”, protesters, including members of student organisations and civil society, today demanded immediate release of Dalit labour rights activist Nodeep Kaur, Shiv Kumar and protesting farmer Ranjeet Singh. The protest was organised by Panjab University’s Student for Society (SFS) and the Panjab University Student Forum (PUSF).
A gathering of around hundred people shouted slogans against the ruling party at the Rooster Fountain in Sector 17. The speakers highlighted “false arrests” of those who have been protesting against the new farm laws.
Advocate RS Bains said: “Strict action should have been taken against the erring management of the factory Nodeep worked in instead of workers fighting for their democratic labour rights.”
Professor Manjit Singh discussed the exploitative nature of new labour codes which are making workers bonded labour. President of the SFS Varinder stressed effectively raising the plight of workers and agricultural labourers.
The speakers, including former PU president Kanupriya, poet Soumya, Dr Khushaal Singh and Satnam Singh Tanda, appealed to farmers unions that they should raise voices against all arrests.
