In order to maintain more transparency in the ongoing work of desilting of Banur Weir, Dera Bassi Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Gupta inspected the site with drainage and mining officials today.

The visit was aimed to strengthen the existing monitoring mechanism further.

“The drainage and mining officials have been instructed to get the fresh drone survey of the material excavated from the bed of Banur Weir,” he said, adding that the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) survey is done regularly in the presence of the departmental vigilance team of the Water Resources Department.

He said there will be no excavation after the 6 pm and it will be ensured by the department that only the vehicles having loaded with the material be let out and no further loading is allowed at that time.

The SDM has sought a detailed report from the Executive Engineer, Mining regarding corrective steps taken by them. He also instructed the local police to keep vigil in the area to prevent any illegal activity.

The Banur Weir desilting site is located on the upstream side of the Banur Weir. For the past few years there has been deposition of silt in the weir, due to which the water storage capacity has decreased significantly.

During the flood season of 2023-24, it was observed that the water level in the Banur Weir was very high, which could have impacted various villages located near the site on the left side of Ghaggar river.

The state, meanwhile, has allowed an excavation of 57,71,132 cubic feet that will generate a revenue of Rs 302.98 lakh.
