The garbage collectors had first suspended their work for a day on December 21 and the MC Commissioner had called them for a meeting on December 26. As the problems remained unresolved, the collectors had announced an indefinite strike on Monday.

The protesting workers were demanding better wages, including a salary hike, as the workload has increased.

The MC had on Monday decided to implement the principle of “no work, no pay”, which means that the salaries will be cut for the protesting staff for the days they remained on strike (on December 21 as well).
