A 31-year-old Good Samaritan found a purse containing gold worth Rs4 lakh and returned it to its owner.
Amandeep Singh, who runs Pizza Sailorz, a restaurant in Sector 23 here, saw a purse lying unattended outside the eatery on Sunday afternoon. He asked one of his workers to get the purse and decided to open it in front of the CCTV camera installed outside the restaurant and in the presence of other shopkeepers.
There were nearly 75 gm of gold ornaments in the purse, he said, adding that he immediately asked jewellers in the market if they had any information about the owner of the ornaments. Several persons claimed to be the owner of the purse, but they could not give the exact number of the items in the purse, he said.
Finally, a resident of Dadu Majra, an artisan who works with a goldsmith, reached his restaurant around 6 pm and gave the exact details of the items found in the purse, including Rs35 that were lying in it. In the presence of members of the Market Association, Amandeep handed over the purse to its owner, who had lost it while shopping in the market. The restaurant owner said, “I am relieved that I did a good job as taught by my parents.”
Naresh Mahajan, president of the Sector 23 Market Association, said Amandeep had set an example for others. The association issued a letter of appreciation to the businessman.
