Golf development initiative kicks off in Chandigarh
The Indian Golf Union (IGU), in collaboration with the Chandigarh Golf Association (CGA), organised the IGU State Golf Development Programme at the Chandigarh Golf Range.
The event was attended by SK Sharma, honorary secretary, IGU; along with Harpuneet Singh Sandhu, member governing council; and chairman of the National Golf Squad of India. The IGU is a national sports federation for golf in India and the apex governing body of the sport.
The CGA was also represented by its vice-president, Siddhartha Kumar, along with Jesse Grewal (Dronacharya Awardee) and Head Coach of the Indian National Golf Team.
The programme is being funded through allocations made to IGU council members, Sharma and Sandhu, for regional golf development, and is being implemented through the CGA. “The landmark initiative is aligned with India’s Sports Ministry’s Khel Neeti 2025 policy, which emphasises grassroots sports development at the micro level by identifying and nurturing children from schools and all sections of society,” said Sharma.
Students from EWS categories and local schools, who have been undergoing training under this IGU programme at the Chandigarh Golf Association Range with CGA coaches, also participated in the event. Sharma added, “Golf equipment and paraphernalia will be provided to the CGA. This commitment will strengthen grassroots golf promotion and create a sustainable pathway for nurturing India’s future golfing talent.”
