Mohali, February 3
The Punjab Government has given a green signal to build a 7-megawatt (MW) waste management to energy plant on 50 acres at Simgauli village in Mohali district under the build own and operate (BOO) model recently.
The Punjab Chief Minister (CM), Capt Amarinder Singh, had cleared the project, which would complete within two years as part of the GMADA-Patiala Municipal Solid Waste cluster. The project would generate 7-megawatt energy from 600 tonnes per day (TPD) waste collected from Mohali and Patiala.
Capt Amarinder Singh also gave his approval to the Local Government Department for signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the Mohali Municipal Corporation, the latter being the nodal agency for the execution of the project.
“This unique project will contribute significantly to the implementation of the state action plan on climate change (SAPCC) and also the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” the CM said.
“The municipal solid waste (MSW), which has always posed a major challenge to the urban local bodies in the state, can now be effectively used as a source of renewable energy. It has not been harnessed systematically on a significant scale,” the CM added.
“I hope the project will pave the way for more such initiatives. As per estimate, the MSW of Punjab can support waste to energy plant of approximately 50 MW,” the CM said.
