Guv flags off traffic, road safety awareness van
In a significant step towards promoting safe roads and responsible driving, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria today launched the innovative Road Safety Exhibition Van and unveiled the Chandigarh Traffic Police Annual Report 2023. Both initiatives are aimed at reducing accidents and fostering a culture of accountability and safety on Chandigarh roads.
The Road Safety Exhibition Van, an unprecedented initiative in the region, is designed to deliver road safety education directly to the community. The mobile van, equipped with interactive displays, audio-visual aids and live safety demonstrations, would traverse the city, visit schools, market areas, busy intersections and residential neighbourhoods.
It aims to engage residents of all ages, provide practical lessons on responsible driving, pedestrian safety and adherence to traffic rules. At the launch, Kataria stressed on the importance of instilling road safety habits early, while advocating for its inclusion in school curriculum to build awareness among youths.
Complementing this initiative, the Governor also released the Chandigarh Traffic Police Annual Report 2023, which highlights a 24 per cent reduction in road accidents over the past year. The report attributes this success to increased enforcement measures, including 9.2 lakh challans issued and Rs 10.4 crore collected in fine from violators. It also outlines technological advancements like AI-based traffic management systems and comprehensive awareness campaigns as pivotal factors that helped in improving road safety in city.
