Gym trainer shot dead after altercation in Kharar market

Assailants also stabbed the victim after firing gunshots

A 31-year-old man was shot dead by a group of three to four assailants in the market of Shivjot Enclave, Kharar, after a minor altercation around 10.45 pm on Friday.

The victim, Gurpreet Singh, a native of Rampura Phull, Bathinda, was a gym trainer. He was shot at by the assailants, who then went on to stab him with his own kirpan before fleeing the spot, cops said.

The accused have been identified as Phillaur resident Amrit, Phagwara residents Onkar Singh, alias Golu, and Akash. The police said they have impounded the SUV used in the crime.

They were sitting in an eatery in the booth market when the minor altercation escalated into violence.

“Things turned ugly quickly as chairs were flung. Seeing himself cornered, the deceased took out a kirpan from his car and attacked the group. The assailants too sustained minor injuries,” sources privy to the incident details said, adding, “One of the assailants took out a pistol and fired a gunshot at the ground to scare the victim, who challenged the youth to fire at him.”

The victim sustained bullet injuries in the abdomen, near the shoulder and the head. One of the assainlant then took the kirpan from his hand and stabbed him repeatedly before fleeing in a white SUV. Locals informed the police, after which Gurpreet was taken to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The victim’s father, Baldev Singh, meanwhile, hinted that the suspects had called him at the spot and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.

Kharar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Karan Singh Sandhu said, “The CCTV footage of the incident has been retrieved and teams have been sent to nab the assailants. They will be arrested soon. When the police reached the spot, the market was already closed. A kirpan and an empty shell were found at the spot.”

According to the FIR, there was blood in the street when the police reached the spot. A forensic team also arrived at the spot and took samples and videography was done. One live round and three empty shells were recovered from the spot.

A murder and Arms Act case has been registered at the Kharar City police station.
