The UT Administration did well to ascertain views of citizens and environmentalists about feasibilty of having a flyover and underpass at Tribune Chowk, despite a political push from the local Member of Parliament, who in her wisdom thought it a better option than a Metro train to solve traffic issues. The participants at the UT Guest House stated that it was a gross violation of the city’s heritage status and a creator of ecological imbalance as hundreds of trees would be cut. Little did the MP realise that this concrete monster would create more problems than it intends to solve in the city, which is known for its green cover. SC Luthra, Chandigarh
Life in ‘Darkest’ sector of Chandigarh
For the past couple of months, residents of Sector 40, Chandigarh, have been living in the dark. Street lights, especially in parks, roads and even greenbelts have been non-functional. Besides, a large number of electric junction boxes with live wires give an open invitation to fatal accident. As a result, the entire area has become a crime hub. Anti-social elements have been striking at will and indulge in chain snatching, stalking and molestation. Despite filing a number of complaints, the authority concerned seems to hardly bother. A lot in the name
A spat between the Punjab minister and Chandigarh MP over naming of international airport cannot be sidelined. Punjab, Haryana and the Airport Authority of India, are the joint stakeholders and objection to unilaterally dropping Chandigarh from the signage without agreement of all the stakeholders in the project is not appropriate. The complete name Chandigarh International Airport should be used by all and a final notification is needed immediately by the Government of India.
