HC violence: Advocate arrested, booked for attempt to murder

After chaotic scenes at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Chandigarh Police have arrested advocate Simranjeet Singh Blassi (39) of Ferozepur for allegedly wielding a sword inside the court complex and attacking fellow lawyers. His arrest came late on Wednesday night, following a video footage that captured the shocking incident.

Officials said Blassi, along with Ravneet Kaur (38) of Amritsar, has been booked on charges of attempt to murder. Kaur is alleged to have provoked him during the altercation. The complaint filed by advocate Palak Dev (35) from Mohali states that Blassi attempted to strike her with the sword during a heated dispute outside court No. 1. Advocate Sutikshan Sharma, who intervened to protect her, sustained injuries on his arm and finger while pulling her away.

Witnesses recounted that chaos spread rapidly in the court corridors as Blassi swung the weapon, forcing lawyers nearby to step in. In the scuffle that followed, several advocates, along with police personnel, managed to overpower him and Kaur. Even after being restrained, the duo allegedly hurled threats at colleagues, further heightening the tension on the high court premises.

The development follows after outrage from the Punjab & Haryana High Court Bar Association, which had earlier on Wednesday afternoon gave a call for a strike to protest alleged police inaction. The association said the arrests and stringent charges vindicate their stand, stressing that the sanctity and safety of court premises must never be compromised.

Police investigations are going on and officers said further action, including recovery of digital evidence and verification of social media posts targeting Bar members will be pursued.
