A local court has ordered a person, Roshan Lal, to do community service for a period of four days at the Sector 45 gaushala after finding him guilty of creating a ruckus at a public place after consuming liquor.
As per the chargesheet, the accused was found consuming liquor in the area under the jurisdiction of the Industrial Area police station on February 12 this year and created a ruckus.
A case under Section 355 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 68(1)B of the Punjab Police Act, 2007, was registered against him. He was arrested in the case.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges framed against him and sought leniency.
Holding him guilty in the case, the court observed that the BNS had introduced community service as an alternative to punishment for minor offences, marking a significant shift in the criminal justice system.
As such, the court opined that it would be in the interest of justice, if, instead of imposing any fine or punishment on the convict, he was directed to do community service. The court observed, “Accordingly, the convict is directed to work as a volunteer for a period of four days at the Sector 45 gaushala. He should report to the investigating officer in the case on August 1, who in turn will coordinate with the gaushala incharge. The convict would be assigned duty for two hours a day. After the completion of four days, the attendance chart of the convict along with the report of his community service be submitted to this court.”
