Mohali, January 11

Six automatic number plate detection and recording (ANPR) cameras are being installed on the stretch of the highway leading from the Chandigarh-Zirakpur barrier to the McDonald’s point in Zirakpur. The high definition cameras are being installed under the Safe Mohali Project.

Zirakpur traffic in-charge Ombir Singh said: “Poles have been installed and the work is in the final phase. One such camera has been installed in the Baltana area also.” The work will be completed by January 15.

The road user safety project is an artificial intelligence-based video surveillance system. As many as 200 similar cameras are being installed in the Kharar and Zirakpur subdivisions at a cost of over Rs2 crore.

The cameras can automatically capture a number plate, identify the digits and record them with historical information of location and time. Such cameras have already been installed at 16 locations covering about 18-km stretch falling under the Phase 1 and Mataur police stations.

Zirakpur resident Mahesh Rehan said: “Crime incidents such as snatching, robbery and carjacking are increasing in the town. So, there is an urgent need to step up the surveillance system. This stretch witnesses several road accidents. Most of the times, streetlights on the flyover are non-functional. Police patrolling in the area too needs be increased at night.”
