Dr Dharam Vir, Assistant Professor, Speech and Hearing, PGI, has been honoured with the Dr DB Kapur Memorial National Award-2019 for his outstanding community services.

The award was given in the presence of Tikshan Sood, former Punjab Cabinet Minister, Dr Ajay Sahai, national chairman, All-India Medicos Society, Dr JS Dardi, organising chairman, 33rd National Medicos Congress, and Raman Kapur, son of Dr DB Kapur.

The award was presented during the 33rd National Medicos Congress at Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Cardio surgeons, paediatricians, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, homoeopaths, BAMS, BEMS and others specialists from all over the country delivered talks at the event.

Dr Dharam Vir delivered a talk on his research that was presented during the European Paediatrics 2019 in the global experts meeting in Rome.

The research was on the “Vowels Acquisition of Different Pathologies”, which was contributed by a team of Dr Dharam Vir, Dr Shailendra Singh, Roshani Mishra, Dr Jaimanti Bakshi, Dr NK Panda, Dr Harmesh Kumar and Lakhvinder.

The team had found that if a child is having cleft lip and palate, his vowel acquisition of the Hindi language will be delayed up to 3.4 months. Mentally challenged children can acquire their vowels at 14.9 months, whereas children who have hearing loss or are deaf and mute acquire vowels at 18 months.

In this study, it was suggested that if the child wants to acquire his vowels, it can be after one and a half year only. It’s important to provide them amplification of hearing through hearing aid or the latest technology i.e. cochlear implant as early as the diagnosis of hearing loss is confirmed.
