Chandigarh, April 13
The city Municipal Corporation is eying replicating the Mumbai model for setting up its first horticulture waste processing plant here.
Before floating a tender for the purpose, MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra, Chief Engineer NP Sharma and Superintending Engineer Krishan Pal Singh will visit Mumbai to study the model there later this month.
“After our Smart City conference in Surat on April 18-19, we will head to Mumbai to visit the plant,” said Anindita.
The plant will be set up on 1.5 acres at 3BRD within the premises of the existing STP site belonging to the MC.
“It includes a shredder to cut horticulture waste into small pieces and then removing moisture and make small ingots with hydraulic press. These ingots, pure wood fibre, will be sold to furnaces as fuel. The department will purchase tractor-trailers for dedicated collection and transportation of horticulture waste from sectors,” she added.
The project will cost around Rs. 3.5 crore, which also includes the construction of a boundary wall and a shed for the plant.
The tender process is expected to start in May. The city generates seven to eight tonnes of horticulture waste daily. However, in autumn and spring, when trees shed their leaves, over 80-tonne waste is generated per day.
