The proceedings at the All- India Sub-Junior Ranking Tournament restarted a day after parents took over the courts in protest against Badminton Association of India (BAI) officials and organisers of the tournament. The parents were pacified by BAI general secretary Sanjay Mishra, who reached at the venue early morning.
“This problem could have solved by the organisers. All they had to do is to pacify the parents and inform them about the reality. However, the contrary happened, and they (parents) were instigated,” claimed Mishra. “Things don’t change overnight. We are not denying any wrongdoing, but there has to be a way. We could have cancelled this championship and also the coming two events, but we didn’t as it will be a complete loss for players. We cannot accept two medical certificates from two different government hospitals. Even the court says that only one medical is valid. The age-fraud proof of two players has been submitted and their identification cards have been deactivated. The committee will take the final call on the ban. The parents also did wrong by stopping the match, but they needed to be handled. Closing venue’s lights and allowing parents to confront tournament referee was no solution,” added Mishra.
After Mishra’s sessions with parents, the tournament restarted. “The tournament was not forcibly given to the Punjab Badminton Association. If they have asked for it, they should have handled it. The parents may have several complaints; it’s the officials’ duty to address those. The association must have their internal conflicts, but the BAI should not be blamed for it,” he added.
