Hyderabad lads posted 270 for 7 against Chandigarh before the stumps were drawn on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy match in Bhubaneswar today.

After winning the toss, Chandigarh skipper Manan Vohra put Hyderabad to bat. Arjit Singh, Raj Angad Bawa and Gaurav Puri made their Ranji debut for the city.

Tanmay Agarwal and Akshath Reddy opened for Hyderabad, whereas Chandigarh started their attack with U-19 World Cup star Bawa. The debutant claimed the wickets of Tanmay (16) and Reddy (28) to reduce Hyderabad to 48 for two wickets.

Hanuma Vihari then joined Tilka Verma and the duo raised a 51-run partnership for the third wicket. Jagjit Singh Sandhu broke the partnership as he took the wicket of Verma (32). Himalay Agarwal (20) then joined the crease and a raised another partnership of 51 before falling prey to Gaurav Gambhir, who went on to send Vihari (59 off 134 balls, with eight boundaries) to pavilion, giving a breather to Chandigarh.

Down to 186 for five, the Hyderabad innings were thereafter taken ahead by Prateek Reddy and Ravi Teja. The duo pushed the total to 220 runs, before Reddy (36) became Sandhu’s second victim. Teja followed the suit as he lost his wicket to Sandhu for 32.

Tanay Thyagarajan (20) and Mickil Jaiswal (12) were at the crease when the stumps were drawn. Sandhu emerged as the best bowler of the day as he claimed three wickets while conceding 50 runs, while Bawa grabbed two for 43 runs. Gambhir sent two batsmen off the field for 66 runs. Debutant Arjit claimed five catches in the match.

HP in strong position against Punjab

Himachal Pradesh lads posted a mammoth total of 324 runs for six wickets on the opening day of their Elite-F match against Punjab, held at New Delhi. After winning the toss and opting to bat, the side scored 324 runs in 90 overs. AP Kalsi remained the main scorer for the side, as he posted 88 runs, including eight boundaries, off 131 balls.

AP Vashisht (78 runs off 104 balls with ten boundaries and two sixes) and Raghav Dhawan (73 runs off 125 balls with 10 boundaries and one six) were the other high scorers for the side. Mayank Markande claimed two wickets while conceding 68 runs while Arshdeep, BaltejSingh and Gurkeerat Mann took a wicket each. —
