Mohali: The Excise Department on Tuesday nabbed four youths near PTL Chowk for allegedly smuggling about 140 boxes of illicit liquor in four vehicles. The suspects, identified as Lovekaran Singh, Munish Sabharwal, Daman Grewal and Ramandeep Singh, are all residents of Ludhiana. Mohali, Phase 1, SHO Shivdeep Singh Brar said the suspects were held at a blockade near PTL Chowk during a checking by the Excise Department officials. “The liquor was meant for sale in the UT only. The suspects used to smuggle the liquor to the Ludhiana area and sell it on inflated prices,’’ said the Excise Department officials. TNS

UP Man hangs self to death

Zirakpur: Parmatma Singh (65), a resident of Ambedkar Colony, Dhakoli, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his home on Tuesday. The victim, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was under mental stress for the past sometime. The police said the victim was shifted to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been kept in the mortuary at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, they said. The police have recorded the statement of the victim’s son, Sushil Singh, under Section 174 of the CrPc. TNS
