Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsThe imposition of huge taxes by the toll plazas on many major roads and national highways have become a headache for the common man. After paying hefty road taxes, citizens also pay many routine taxes, including road tax. Private players are making huge bucks by imposing exorbitant toll taxes. Why the government is unable to provide safe roads and perform its duty after collecting heavy road taxes? There seems to be a hidden nexus between influential private bodies, government officials and politicians. All seem to be benefitting from this unholy nexus except the public. Meanwhile, making FASTag compulsory is a good initiative. It will enhance transparency, and improve governance, functioning as well as accountability of the Toll plazas. Many toll plazas keep on charging for years even after the cost and profit of road or highway construction is complete. Such looting of the public’s hard-earned money must be stopped.
